Managed Hosting II: North America Overview Winter 2010
Analyst report by 451 Research, published on 12/23/2009
The Managed Hosting North America Overview, Winter 2010 report is the latest in the series of managed hosting reports that earlier in the year focused on the global market for managed hosting. In this report, we examine some of the latest trends driving the managed hosting market, including the increasing adoption of business-critical managed application management – a practice previously considered taboo for most managed hosting providers, due to the affiliation with the largely defunct ASP model. The report also documents the increasing migration of dedicated hosting providers up the value stack toward offering managed hosting services, while ironically, so many of the largest managed hosting providers are in turn diversifying their offering to appeal to the rapidly expanding SMB sector. Naturally, a part of that move includes the launching of several new cloud computing products as well.
The report also looks at the global organizations involved in outsourced managed services and enablement technologies and discusses how these players are helping to publicize the benefits of managed infrastructure services over in-house IT management. Although the global market as a whole slowed a little, the North American market was hit hardest in terms of managed hosting growth.
Surprisingly, it was the mid-tier managed hosters that continued to make up for the activity in the managed hosting sector. And it is some of these slightly lesser-known companies that T1R has chosen to spotlight in the profile section of this report. Some of these firms exemplify the opportunity for dedicated hosting providers to make a dent in the managed hosting pie, while others have come from a world of ERP-style applications, and backed into the managed hosting world through customer demand. The hurdles to entry in this segment clearly continue to remain relatively low as outsourced IT services continue to gain acceptance in the enterprise space.
