The Needle in the Stack: Which Cloud Platform to Choose?

Analyst report by 451 Research, published on 11/13/2012

Cloud platforms (or cloud stacks) are software services that abstract compute, network and storage resources to present a unified interface to end users. Important differences between clouds include whether they are open or closed source and, if open source, how permissive their license is, as well as whether they focus on the needs of service providers or enterprises. However, the choice of a cloud platform does not yet dictate its users' destinies.

This report is designed to give service providers, enterprises and investors basic familiarity with the architecture of the most important cloud stacks and the key differences between them. We begin by defining and describing what a cloud stack is and what it does. We distinguish between cloud stacks and products in the key adjacent markets. We examine the origins of various cloud stacks and compare the results, and we discuss whether cloud choice actually matters. We also look at market sizing. This report provides a (non-exhaustive) directory of the most important cloud platforms we cover. It concludes with an overview of other adjacent markets.
