Distributed versus centralized power backup strategies

White paper by Eaton, published on 6/1/2012

Though power protection solutions vary in numerous ways, all but the largest data centers use one of two basic approaches when deploying uninterruptible power systems (UPSs): Either they distribute many smaller UPSs among their server racks or they install one or two large UPSs centrally within or near their server room. Both strategies have strengths and weaknesses, and there is no simple formula for determining which one a given company should use. This white paper attempts to simplify the decision-making process, however, by explaining each architecture's pros and cons, outlining the key questions to ask when deciding between them and describing ways to mitigate the weaknessesof whichever approach you ultimately select
